Maintenance
HomeFront is an initiative from USAA that was created to gauge the potential need for a home maintenance app aimed to simplify and streamline household management tasks.
HomeFront aims to provide homeowners with a centralized platform to effectively track, schedule, and manage various maintenance activities to ensure the well-being and longevity of their homes.
Home maintenance can be a challenging and time-consuming task for homeowners, often involving multiple contractors, service providers, and a plethora of documents.
The goal of HomeFront is to address these challenges by offering an intuitive and comprehensive digital solution that brings together all aspects of home maintenance under one roof.
The initial phase of the project involved conducting extensive market research to understand the needs and pain points of homeowners concerning home maintenance.
Key findings included:
Over 60% of homeowners struggle to keep track of home maintenance tasks and schedules.
Many homeowners find it challenging to find reliable and professional service providers for various tasks.
DIY tutorials and guides are highly sought after, especially for minor repairs and maintenance.
Mobile applications are the preferred choice for managing tasks due to their convenience and accessibility.
The development of the HomeFront prototype followed a user-centered design approach, involving the following stages:
Research and Analysis
Extensive market research, user surveys, and interviews were conducted to understand the pain points and needs of homeowners in managing home maintenance tasks. Competitor analysis and industry trends were also considered.
Conceptualization
Based on the research insights, a product concept was formulated, defining the core features and functionalities of the app. This included task management, contractor communication, documentation storage, and data analytics.
Wireframing and Prototyping
Low-fidelity wireframes were created to establish the app's structure, user flow, and interactions. Iterative feedback sessions were conducted with potential users to refine the design. Once the wireframes were validated, a high-fidelity prototype was developed.
Visual Design
The visual design phase focused on creating a visually appealing and intuitive user interface (UI) that aligns with the brand identity of HomeFront. Color schemes, typography, and iconography were carefully chosen to enhance the user experience.
User Testing
The high-fidelity prototype was subjected to rigorous internal and external user testing sessions with a diverse group of participants. Their feedback and suggestions were incorporated into subsequent iterations of the design.

Wireframing and Prototyping
The wireframing process involved creating low-fidelity sketches and digital wireframes to visualize the app's structure and flow. The HomeFront prototype showcased several features that aimed to enhance the user experience and streamline home maintenance processes. Key considerations during this phase included:
User-Friendly Interface: The app's design emphasized simplicity and clarity, ensuring users could easily navigate through different sections.
USAA Provided Recommendations: The app integrated a database of verified and reviewed service providers for various home maintenance tasks, making it easy for users to find trustworthy professionals and allowing our business partners to consider collaboration with service providers.
DIY Guides: The DIY Guides section offered step-by-step tutorials with images and videos for minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
Task Management: Users could create and manage tasks related to home maintenance, such as scheduling inspections, servicing equipment, or cleaning gutters. Task reminders and notifications ensured timely completion.
Analytics and Insights: The app offered visual analytics and insights into the user's home maintenance activities. This feature allowed homeowners to track their expenses, identify patterns, and make informed decisions about future maintenance tasks.

User Testing and Feedback
In this phase, the HomeFront prototype was tested with a diverse group of homeowners to gather valuable feedback. I analyzed the user interactions, pain points, and suggestions for improvement. Major feedback points included:
Enhanced Task Scheduling: Some users requested recurring task options and the ability to set task priorities, and set their own personal tasks.
User-Friendly Interface: Participants appreciated the app's intuitive interface, which made it easy to navigate and understand the various features.
Simplified Onboarding: Users found the onboarding process straightforward but suggested adding a brief tutorial for first-time users.
Customizability: Participants suggested the inclusion of customization options to tailor the app to their specific home maintenance needs.
Integration with Smart Home Devices: Some users expressed interest in integrating HomeFront with smart home devices, allowing for seamless monitoring and control of home maintenance tasks.
Refinement and Final Prototype
Using member feedback from user interview and testing, I iterated on the prototype to improve it’s functionality and usability. Made adjustments to improve the onboarding process, navigation, task scheduling, task completion. We wanted to make sure our users understand the tasks recommendations were based on the users' location, neighborhood, claim history and national weather data.
